Lodging Manager

Are you an experienced Lodging Manager or Vacation Rental Manager looking to move to the ruggedly beautiful Mendocino coast while still having a well paying and unique job?  Then consider joining the Point Arena Lighthouse as our Lodging Manager, responsible for filling up our seven vacation cottages and managing our experienced Lodging and Housekeeping staff.

Summary of Position

This is a full time Lodging Manager position. The Point Arena Lighthouse, tallest Lighthouse on the Pacific Coast, is a premier tourist destination on the Mendocino Coast. It includes 23 acres of grounds, Museum, 115’ tall Lighthouse Tower, Gift Store and seven unique vacation cottages. Have one long time Lodging Clerk that works 2 days a week and Housekeeping staff of three that are also long time employees and very competent and efficient. Great work environment – the Lighthouse is surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean and on the fourth side by the Point Arena-Stornetta Unit of the California Coastal National Monument. You will be working with a very experienced, supportive and committed Management team. We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and passionate person with Lodging and/or vacation rental experience, good organization and great customer service skills. Position is responsible for:

  • Managing phone, online and email reservations for our seven vacation rentals
  • Manage online reservations systems and Online Travel Agencies (OTA) – OpenHotel, Airbnb, Expedia, Booking.com, etc.
  • Managing one Lodging clerk and three Housekeepers
  • Guest relations
  • Lighthouse memberships
  • Lodging and Housekeeping business processes, coordination and communication
  • Ongoing improvement of the rental cottages’ equipment, supplies and décor
  • Marketing, including social media and advertising
  • After hours guest support

Required Skills:

  • 3-5 years experience in Lodging, Hotel or Vacation Rental management
  • General office administration experience, including experience with taking inbound calls and emails, creating and organizing spreadsheets, working on mailing campaigns, working in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience supervising or managing others
  • Impeccable customer service
  • Experience with hotel management software
  • Experience with OTA setup and ongoing support
  • Experience with, or ability to easily learn, various software systems including but not limited to membership databases, email management systems and payment management systems
  • Marketing experience, including paid and organic social media advertising, building audiences and adhering to branding and/or policy guidelines
  • Graphic design skills: experience creating newsletters, flyers, and advertisement graphics for web and print
  • Preferred experience with Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop
  • WordPress, HTML, SEO or general website design experience a plus
  • Photography skills a plus

Lodging Manager will report to the Executive Director (ED) and will work closely with him and the Finance/HR Manager (FHM) to develop strategies to increase occupancy, improve guest experience and ratings, enhance online presence and coverage by travel sites, suggest special promotions and manage the online reservations system. Salary dependent upon qualifications. Full time position, work days Thursday through Monday. Please note that this position does NOT include on premises lodging for the Lodging Manager.  We only have our seven vacation cottages on the property and they all contribute substantially to the revenue stream of our non-profit organization.  We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is fully funded by our own operations – guest admissions to the Museum and Tower, Gift Store, vacation rentals, memberships and donations.

Gift Store Clerk (part time)

The iconic Point Arena Lighthouse needs a part time Gift Store Clerk. Great work environment for energetic and friendly person with experience in guest relations, retail, point-of-sale (POS) systems, and that has good organization and great customer service skills.

Summary of Position

Gift Store Clerk role involves opening the register, greeting guests as they come into the Gift Store, helping guests find what they want, making sales, answering guest questions, straightening up the merchandise, restocking, assisting in receiving and putting away new deliveries, closing out the register and balancing the day’s transactions.  The Lighthouse Gift Store is in the historic Fog Signal Building and is not your typical tourist attraction collection of merchandise. Our Gift Store offers a wide variety of high-quality t-shirts, sweatshirts, pullovers, jackets and outerwear as you would expect, but also locally made jewelry, books, postcards, decorative housewares, children’s items, clocks and wall art, posters, glassware and more. We welcome over 50K guests a year from the area, California, the country and the world. We use Lightspeed as our POS system.

Schedule flexibility is a must, you may or may not have standard days on the schedule (i.e. every Friday and Saturday).  Ability to work weekends is required, particularly in the summer months.  Hours for the position are as follows:

9:45 a.m. to around 4 p.m.
9:45 a.m. to around 5 p.m. Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day
Occasional evening coverage for our Full Moon Night Tours, which can start anywhere from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and last for 2 hours or more

The Lighthouse is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 1+ years in retail environment, preferably in a gift store
  • Experience using a POS system
  • Great customer service
  • General computer skills
  • Organized
  • Physically fit.  Able to be on your feet for entire shift, lift and carry boxes up to 40 lbs
  • Experience with Microsoft Office desirable

Tour Guide (part time)

The iconic Point Arena Lighthouse needs a part time Tour Guide. Great work environment for energetic and friendly person with experience in guest relations and with great customer service skills.

Summary of Position

Tour Guide role involves greeting guests, giving presentations on the Lighthouse history, technology, purpose and surrounding area, opening and closing the Museum and grounds and other duties as assigned.  On a rotating basis you will also man the entry kiosk and sell admission tickets to guests, which involves handling cash, using our online Point of Sale (POS) system to record sales, taking credit card payments and handing out admission tickets.  Tour Guides spend their shifts in the Museum (ground level), Lighthouse Tower (115′ tall, 145 steps to the top), and/or kiosk.  You must be physically capable of climbing the 145 steps up to 5 times a day, although average is 2 times.  Other duties include setting DVD player with Lighthouse DVD to run in Museum , opening up Museum shades, hoisting and taking down flags at start and end of shift,
